IV Sedation

There are millions of people out there who do not get the dental care they need because of fear or anxiety. Are you one of them?  Does the thought of going to the dentist make you weak with fear, send a shiver up your spine, paralyze you?  Has it come to the point that it is impossible for you to pick up the phone to call the dentist for an appointment? Maybe the time has come where you have no choice but to come to the dentist because of a problem you are having. How are you ever going to do it? Believe it or not, there are ways to conquer this anxiety, with IV sedation. What is IV sedation?    You will leave the office feeling relaxed and calmed.  It will be hard for you to believe that you have had dental work done. You may have been in the chair for hours and not realize it.  We offer IV sedation as one of our antianxiety options.  We recommend this  over oral sedation for our most severely anxious patients.(See Corah’s Anxiety Scale)  IV or intravenous sedation is similar to oral sedation.  In that medication is used to relax the patient.    However with oral sedation medication is administered orally,  and with IV sedation it is administered through a vein.  The advantage of IV sedation is that it is more predictable and it takes effect within about a minute.  With oral sedation you have to wait about an hour for its effects and if you need more medication to relax you, you have to wait.  With IV sedation more medication can be given and take effect almost immediately.  Like oral sedation you will take a tranquilizer (Valium)  the night before the appointment to help you sleep.  The following day, unlike oral sedation  you will usually take another Valium one hour before your appointment.  This help you to be relaxed for the IV.  Someone will need to drive you to the appointment.  When you arrive, you will be relaxed from the Valium and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) may be administered before the IV is started.  The IV medication(Versed) will be administered.  Within minutes you will be totally relaxed for a stress free dental visit.  See our Anti-anxiety video at http://delmarvadentalservices.com/news-media/recent-videos/ IV Sedation
